Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program

The Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program (FFVP) is part of an initiative by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to offer elementary schools a wider variety of fresh produce than what is available through regular USDA Child Nutrition Programs, such as the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). 
 
The program goal is to create healthier school environments by providing healthier food choices, expanding the variety of fruits and vegetables children experience, increasing children's fruit and vegetable consumption, and making a difference in children's diets to impact their present and future health.  
 
For the 2023-2024 school year, the following schools were awarded grants:

Grace Jordan Elementary Morley Nelson Elementary
Hawthorne Elementary Owyhee Elementary
Hillcrest Elementary Whitney Elementary
Horizon Elementary Whittier Elementary
Jefferson Elementary Wm H Taft Elementary








How the program works

A fresh fruit or vegetable snack will be provided 3-5 days/week to all students at the schools awarded the grants. Snacks are typically delivered to students in their classroom after lunch but before the end of the school day. Participation is optional. Nutrition education about the food items being offered is provided whenever possible.
